Sluice Boxes State Park is located on Belt Creek near Great Falls Montana, and is a perfect place to see the wilderness reclaiming land formerly used by humans. This area offers both interesting historical sites and impressive scenery. Bacpacking through this deep winding canyon is a spectacular experience. There are remains of an old railroad, prospector cabins, and other evidence of early frontier settlers in the area. The Montana Central Railroad (no longer in use) was built well before the miners and the prospectors began to use the lands that are now the State Park, and the old railroad route through the canyon is now the route of the trail through the park. The railroad was used by white settlers and ranchers prior to the the first mining claim in the canyon area, and there are a number of railroad features including an old railroad tunnel to be seen in the Park.
The first mining claim in the area was established in the 1870’s, and soon after more prospectors flocked to Belt Creek hoping to find additional deposits of silver and lead or other precious metals. The abandoned town of Albright is in the park and gives visitors a glimpse into frontier mining life at the turn of the 1900’s. There are also caves used by Native Americans for shelter; and evidence of pictographs and teepee rings have been found in the canyon. The seven mile one-way hike through the park is somewhat challenging because of creek crossings, and one we recommend for those with some backpacking experience who are looking for more.
As always, this trip includes our complimentary shuttle from Missoula to the park. We also provide shuttle pick up in Helena and Great Falls. If you choose the shuttle from Missoula or Helena, you will get to see The King’s Hill Scenic Byway which winds along Belt Creek through the towns of Neihart and Monarch, two towns the Montana Central Road had on it’s route. This area is rich with history and beautiful scenery is truly one of Montana’s best kept secrets.
